Welcome to St Mary The Virgin, Old Town, Eastbourne

St Mary’s has been Eastbourne’s Parish Church for nearly a thousand years. The town’s growth since the nineteenth century has seen the building of many newer churches and the shrinking of St Mary’s own parish area and St Mary’s is presently part of the Church of England’s Rural Deanery of Eastbourne, along with those churches and others towards Willingdon and Polegate, Pevensey and Westham, Langney and Stone Cross.

“Welcome to our website. I hope very much that you will find it offers a taste of who we are and what we do. What it can’t do is offer a taste of what we are like; or, more importantly, of what the God we worship and the Jesus we seek to serve are really like. For that you need to experience actual, not virtual, reality.

That reality is rooted in worship: our offering of ourselves to God in response to his gift of himself to us. Our Christian living stems from our encounter with God in Word and Sacrament. (The ministry of Word and Sacrament at St Mary’s is, broadly speaking, within the catholic – “High Church” – tradition of the Church of England.) Each day the Eucharist ends with the injunction to “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord”and we seek to heed the words in our service to the community of Eastbourne, especially within the parish boundaries,  and to our neighbours.

Services are detailed on the ‘Worship’ tab above. Our church really is a Parish Church. As such it is open to residents and visitors, to the faithful and to enquirers and you are as welcome in person as you are here.”
